Excerpt: Since its establishment in 1995, Ballet Manila has distinguished itself as a company by adopting local and popular elements in Philippine culture. Its founder and artistic director Lisa Macuja, in fact, has been touted by local media as the “ballerina ng bayan” in recognition of her bid to make ballet more accessible to a wider mass audience. The company’s restaging of Tatlong Kuwento ni Lola Basyang, which opened its twentieth season, was a valiant effort at popularizing ballet. The production adapts three children’s books, written by Christine Bellen and illustrated by Frances Alcaraz, that retell three Lola Basyang stories.
