Excerpt: The following is a transcript of the conversation with Indonesian writer Eka Kurniawan, who was in Manila on 30 September–4 October as keynote speaker at the 85th PEN International Congress, with its theme and congress title Speaking in Tongues: Literary Freedom and Indigenous Languages. This interview is part of a podcast series recorded for Areté, in collaboration with Kritika Kultura and the Creative Writing Program of the Ateneo Department of Fine Arts. The podcasts are recorded in the Emmanuel Torres Literary Arts Room named in honor of the poet, critic, and literature professor, who was also the first and longtime curator of the Ateneo Art Gallery. The interview was conducted by Dominic Sy, who teaches with the Department of English and Comparative Literature, University of the Philippines, Diliman.
