Excerpt: Since bursting into the world-historical scene in the seventh century, Islam has largely had a bad name. From medieval Europeans to contemporary commentators, it has been perceived as, among other things, a fanatical religion, prone to violence and extremism, of which 9/11 was arguably the sine qua non.
