Sugid kag panime-et : discourse and reflexivity on the cultural meanings of patadyong and the Antiqueno identity

The material, functional and symbolic meanings that users and makers invest in objects makes us know and understand notions of their identity. One such relationship is between the Antiqueos and the hand woven tubular garment that they make and use - the patadyong. Framed on Pierre Nora's les lieux de memoire (sites of memory) and Grant McCracken's theorizing on the structure and movement of cultural meaning, this study answered the question: What do Antiqueos' perception of the material, functional and symbolic meanings of patadyong tell us about how they conceive their Antiqueo identity? The sugid kag panim?-?t (discourse and reflexivity) of the Antiqueo weavers, ordinary consumers of patadyong, cultural workers and funders varied yet informed us that their identity is linked to the idyllic past, tradition, land, family and social relations, to the feminine body and some maternal qualities. There is, however, a need for some mechanisms that will intensely embed patadyong as emblematic of the Antiqueo Identity. This study contributes to the assertion that notions identity is 'fluid' rather than based on some monolithic statements because people see objects in relation to their social position. An object, then, is very significant in the social construction of identity because it is constituted in the changing norms, traditions and stories that people treasure and value and may be transmitted as new patterns of social interaction.
