Description
Summary:In this study, a selective nano-particle sized imprinted polymer (MIP) was successfully synthesized for naphthalene based on molecular recognition using the free-radical precipitation polymerization technique. The synthesis components include template naphthalene and functional monomer methacrylic acid, cross-linker ethylene glycol dimethacrylate and initiator benzoyl peroxide in toluene acting as the porogenic solvent. This polymer was examined for selectivity and rebinding characteristics. The polymers were also characterized by various techniques, such as FTIR, 1H-NMR, UV-Vis and SEM. The imprinted polymer showed that the binding capacity was highest for the template naphthalene in relation to other flat molecules namely; 1-nitronaphthalene, 1-bromo-2,4-dinitrobenzene and anthracene. Results also reveal that the MIP prepared was able to selectively recognize the template naphthalene.
