QH301 Biology QK Botany QL Zoology An experimental research entitled “ Protective Potential of Strongylodon macrobotrys (Jade vine) Crude Root Extract on Acetylsalicylic Acid-Induced Gastric Ulcer on Mus musculus (Albino mice)” was conducted to determine if there is a significant difference on the diameter of the gastric ulcer crater in groups treated with Acetylsalicylic Acid. The study also compared the gross morphological and histological appearance of the stomach obtained from the groups treated with Acetylsalicylic Acid. A multiple Dose Treatment was conducted for 8 days, with 20-hr interval per administration of treatment. Test animals that were acquired from BFAD were divided into three groups, T0 was treated with normal saline solution (2ml/kg), T1 received normal saline solution (2 ml/kg) and was given acetylsalicylic acid (200mg/kg) post the last treatment, T2 was given crude root extract of Strongylodon macrobotrys (150ml/kg) and received acetylsalicylic acid (200 mg/kg) post the last administration of the treatment. All groups were sacrificed after four hours to observe the gross morphological and histopathological changes caused by acetylsalicylic acid, and to compute the ulcer index of the T1 and T2 group, and compare it to the normal stomach of the group in T0. All test animals in T0 showed no signs of ulcer. While T1 showed a severe appearance of gastric ulcer, the changes in the stomach of T2 were not as severe as in T1. T2 also showed a lesser ulcer index of .9739 while T1 showed an ulcer index of 1.8922. This suggests that the ulcer craters are smaller in the animals pre-treated with Strongylodon macrobotrys crude root extract. In general, this study gave an insight on the potential of Strongylodon macrobotrys in treating acetylsalicylic-induced gastric ulcer on albino mice.
