Exploring corporate social responsibility (CSR) landscape in Singapore

This is an academic exploratory research with a purpose to examine the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Singapore. It aims to provide a greater insight to the different perspectives, level of understanding and involvement with respect to CSR. Through this insight, we hope that readers are able to acquire greater knowledge of CSR and, thus, be consciously involved in it as we deeply believe that everyone has a part to play to make this world a better living place for not only themselves, but perhaps their future generation. The paper starts off with a general introduction to the concept. As it is understood that for many people, CSR is a fairly novel term and the idea itself is normally considered fuzzy, if not confusing; without a good fundamental knowledge of it, one would not be able to follow up with the whole research. With the basic understanding, Chapter 2 gives the reader a comparison between Singapore and some foreign countries regarding its CSR movement. The level of CSR involvement in Singapore is benchmarked against that in other countries, as a gauge of how Singapore is doing. The subsequent three chapters (3, 4 & 5) form the bulk of this paper. They touch on the methodology that has been adopted for the research of this paper. In order to achieve the objectives set for this paper, some interviews were made and a public survey with a sample size of 259 respondents was conducted. This is followed by a comprehensive discussion of the information that has been collected. The discussion includes the insights and implications of the research findings. In addition, a good example of a particular corporation that is extensively involved in CSR activities is illustrated in Chapter 6. Its main objective is to present the practicality of CSR to the reader, which will eventually add on to the knowledge that he/she has. After which, Chapter 7 covers the limitations that this research encountered and the possible future research that can be carried out to further explore any interesting findings. An attempt to have a more philosophical view to conclude the final chapter is made. This is in the hope of provoking the reader’s thoughts about CSR before he/she flips the final page.
