The estimation and detection systems are divided into different categories based on the involved sensors. Since the fusion of multiple sensors is widely adopted for building occupancy estimation and detection, a review on the systems based on different combination of sensors is also performed. Then, we conduct a comparison of different sensor types for the estimation and detection of occupancy. Finally, some potential future research directions are indicated based on current progresses of the systems.
