Summary: | The following report documents the process of producing Going Glocal, a 24-minute video documentary that aims to shed new light on the much recycled but never tiresome ‘foreign talent’ debate by zooming in on the little-explored meaning of integration in an increasingly multi-cultural Singapore. The report begins with an overview and background of the documentary. It also details the pre-production efforts, production process and post-production work, with notes on the producers’ methods of idea development, decision-making and problem solving. Going Glocal is produced against the backdrop of Singaporeans’ obsession with the ‘foreign talent’ issue. Stringing together responses from foreigners residing in Singapore, sociologists, man-on-the-street and government officials, Going Glocal explores the various notions of integration held by foreign talents of different backgrounds and hopes to make viewers understand integration as a process that should be undertaken by both immigrants and locals. The findings of this documentary revealed that although foreign talents generally hold on to a global mindset, their transient nature and physical mobility do not necessarily diminish their level of commitment towards their home and host countries. The overall conclusion is that the nature of concepts like integration, loyalty and commitment is fluid, and even as locals continue to question foreign talents’ motives in making Singapore their new home, they ought to reflect on their own sense of loyalty to Singapore at the same time. |
