Summary:This dissertation aims to present a balanced view on the benefits of using fertilizers and its environmental impact. It is not intended to be a scientific document, but it attempts to be as technically correct as possible. Fertilizers are added to the soil to supply elements essential to the growth of plants. These elements include the major nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and sulfur, as well as the trace elements such as iron, zinc, and magnesium. Traditionally, fertilizers can be classified as chemical fertilizers and biofertilizers [1].
