Summary:As the retail industry in Singapore has become more formalized and well-structured to fit the agenda of the country to prosperous as an advanced nation, its traditional retailing are soon dissipating into thin air. Before these conventional activities disappeared due to fierce competitions, we hoped to trace the evolution of the retail industry in Singapore, so as to provide a better understanding and appreciation towards the historical events that have brought changes into our lives today. In order to have a clearer picture of the past events, we have recognized the key factor that has driven the civilization of Singapore this far. The three basic necessities for survival are food, clothing and shelter. However, out of these three factors, food is deemed as the most important driver that has shaped the retail industry today.
