Summary: | Modern applications like teleconferencing, distance learning and training and the World-Wide Web, require accessing and displaying rich content consisting of text graphics, audio/video and animation. Predictable Quality of Service (QoS) in terms of controlled response time and guaranteed bandwidth is increasingly important. Many of these applications use popular Internet protocols such as TCP/UDP and IP. Traditionally these Internet protocols have provided no suuport to QoS. IPv6, a new Internet Protocol version 6 is introduced to circumvent the problems with IPv4. The emergence of reservation protocols such as RSVP along with IPv6 and availability of ATM-based network infrastructure have made it possible to reserve network resources to ensure predictable QoS. |
