The Atkinson cycle is a modification of the Otto cycle wherein the combustion gasses are allowed to expand to atmospheric pressure before being exhausted out of the engine. Thermodynamic analysis of this cycle shows that there is potential for thermal efficiency gain over the Otto cycles.
