Despite its small footprint, smartphones contribute considerably to e-waste as compared to larger everyday household electronics. Considering that smartphones are often within their expected lifespan when they get discarded, new use cases could be proposed to incentivize the keeping and repurposing of these phones, preventing them from becoming potential pollutants. This project aims to provide such use cases in the area of portable surveillance, where smartphones will be used for security similar to Internet Protocol (IP) Cameras. This encourages reuse and eases entry for consumers to conduct home security. This will be realized through the development of the Mobile Surveillance (MS) Android application. This application’s key features allow the surveillance phone to be remotely controlled through Short Message Services (SMS). The application is also integrated with Dropbox, a cloud storage service, to facilitate the storing of the captured files. The main functionalities of the surveillance phone include Image Capturing, Video Recording, Motion-Detection, and Live-streaming.
