Description
Summary:An indoor map was created for Nanyang Technological University (NTU) to aid its students, staff, and visitors to search for rooms and navigate around the campus. The indoor map was built as a website using Hypertext Mark-up Language (HTML), Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), and JavaScript (JS). Several JS libraries were used, mainly Leaflet, which served as the foundation for the indoor map. The indoor map allows users to search for a location and to find directions from one point to another within the campus. Helpful information such as opening hours of the restaurants and levels that the lift serves, is also embedded in the indoor map. This allows users to obtain the information they would want to know directly from the indoor map. A group of 30 participants were recruited to test and rate the indoor map. The average rating was above 3 out of 5 for each of the criteria of “Performance”, “Graphical user interface design”, “User-friendliness”, and “Intuitiveness”. In terms of routing, the participants also gave a rating of above 3 out of 5 for various criteria. Overall, the indoor map achieved a rating of 4.23 out of 5, meaning that participants were satisfied with the map. The indoor map was only built for academic buildings in North Spine. Continuation of the project will see for the expansion to include all other buildings on the campus, both academic and non-academic, and for additional useful information, such as camera live feed, to be integrated. Real-time indoor positioning could be considered as well to improve user’s experience. In the future when the indoor map becomes increasingly complex, transforming the indoor map from the current 2D format to 3D format, and modifying routing algorithm may be considered to ensure user satisfaction.
