Description
Summary:In the 21st century, the world pays much more attention on the issue of climate change. The greatest push for the world leaders to implement actions to curb/slow the effects of Global Warming. This led to a serious research advancement on the renewable energy as researchers around the world continues to put in effort to utilise the renewable energy to either making renewable energy sources more efficient or more effective. As the picture of the renewable energy starts getting painted, together with the onset of smart cities, the idea of Smart Grid came into the picture. However, the proposed smart grid system still requires much work to integrate the renewable energy sources. One of the lacking ways in the conventional grid is that power flow unidirectional, as such power can only flow in a single direction, from the generator to the consumer. However, with the onset of renewable energy system as well as the idea of energy storage, the proposed new grid system needs to be bi-directional, such that the it might allow consumers to sell energy back into the grid introducing its bidirectional capability. One aspect of the proposed new grid system is the replacement of conventional distribution transformers to Solid-State Transformers (SST). The SST not only boast of its bi-directional power flow capability, renewable energy sources can be included within the grid easily due to the introduction of DC Bus.
