The disruptive technology of smart home applications constructed byIoT is largely imperfect and scattered. Smart home improves home environment in monitoring and controlling of home appliances. However, the scattering of different manufacturing products had bought up problems like the installation of individual software and the lack of domestic universal connections. In this project a proposal on advancing the smart home application by embeddingmore sensors and actuator, as well as employing of Google equipment to further enhance the existing product to relieve the fragmentation of Smart home technologies. Specifically, three applications are developed and implemented in this project as summarised below. First, a Smart Pet Feeder is built for automatically feeding home pets in regular time. It also features a few functions to refill the pet feeder, checking of the amount of food fed to the pet, and monitoring of the pet’s eating behaviour. Second, a Security Door System is designed for remotely control of door lock at all time. It can provide a quick review of the visitor through notification and getting permission from the owner to enter the premises. Third, a WIFI camera is placed to monitor and gives assurance of the safety in the premises. It also features motion detection where once any motion is detected, a notification will be sent to the owner’s phone to alert him of any unauthorised movement. The applications are based on a popular microcomputer, Raspberry Pi. Sensors, and actuators are connected directly to the Raspberry Pi and all controls and communication are done through the Raspberry Pi via WIFI and internet. Software like IFTTT and Pushbullet message service are employed to broaden the range of communication between different smart devices. These applications are also integrated with Google service like Google Assistant and Google Home Mini to allow voice or speech control at anywhere at any time. The report details the design, development, implementation, and testing of these applications. Testing, results, and recommendations for further enhancement are included at the end of the report.
