Summary:With the rapid development of the cellular system technology of fifth-generation (5G), there is a need for the base-station antennas to be revised in order to meet the demand for more functionalities and accommodate all the operating frequency bandwidth into a single compact multiband shared aperture antenna. In this project, the proposed antenna is a multiband microstrip patch array antenna with the expected operating range of 900MHz, 1800MHz, 2.6GHz, 3.6GHz, 4.9GHz and 28GHz. Upon conducting literature review of antenna theories and antenna design techniques, designs and simulation was conducted through High-Frequency Structural Simulator (HFSS). Performance of the antenna was analyzed by the parameters such as reflection coefficient, radiation pattern, gain pattern and directivity. Ultimately, a multiband microstrip patch antenna operating from the frequency band from 900MHz to 5.2GHz was designed. However, it is noted that the 28GHz frequency band was not achieved in the final design of the antenna.
