Despite its presence, it has slowly become this commodity, slowing fading into the background of our lives. However, paper is more than just a material and it has a deeper meaning to it. By introducing different aspects and qualities to a sheet of paper in ways not commonly thought of, this project aims to introduce a different perspective of how paper can be seen and to be more appreciated before it becomes something of the past. This project consists of research done into the history of paper in various points in time and region in the world, as well my own perspective on paper through my eyes as a child and development as a designer. It also includes the points of view that were developed through my travels in Japan, specifically to Shinto shrines and the Awagami Paper Factory that solidified my views which became a key driving force in this project. By exploring the different aspects and qualities of paper made up of things that I’ve learnt and seen, this project aims to bring a different perspective on how a sheet of paper can be seen. This project focuses on not just the physical quality of paper, but rather the idea of paper itself. It brings people on a journey of paper having a spiritual connotation to being something that is personal and humane.
