In recent years, there has been an increased interest in “text neck syndrome”. Furthermore, the age group found with “text neck syndrome” has been getting younger. (Annemarie, 2019) Text neck is also known as Turtle Neck posture or anterior head syndrome. It is a modern age term coined by US chiropractor Dr. DL Fishman. It is defined as a “repeated stress injury and pain in the neck resulting from excessive watching or texting on handheld devices over a sustained period.” It can also cause shoulder pain, upper back pain, headaches and increased thoracic kyphosis (hunchback) culminating in spinal degeneration, and early arthritis. (Physiopedia) The large aim of this project is to: 1) raise awareness on the growing issue of poor posture due to modern-day technology devices 2) design a mobile application prototype to help adopt good posture habits with the focus on mobile device use 3) expand my creative technical and design skills for mobile user interface (UI) design. 4) explore the game pipeline for mobile applications. The market for the mobile application for “text neck syndrome” is still new and isn’t as well developed as the desktop version apps and other health apps. Creating a (game-like) playable app would create awareness for text neck syndrome faster and appeal to more extensive social networks, especially the younger generation.Chin-Up!aims to raise awareness of the growing issue of text-neck syndrome and poor posture. It is integrating app technology and game experience to motivate young adults to use mobile handheld devices properly. It is only through proper posture that the participant can continue playing the game.
