Stimulating interest and involvement in the learning process of pupils in a Primary 6EM3 classroom

The experiment presented in this dissertation was designed to investigate the effect of heightened interest and involvement on the learning process of a group of Primary Six EM3 students in a government school in Singapore. Two teaching approaches were used in the delivery of lessons - the traditional teacher-centered, chalk-and-talk approach and the experimental approach. The latter was designed to stimulate interest and student involvement in the learning process, which comprised of group activities. The results confirmed that the EMS students learned better when their interests were stimulated and when involvement in the learning process was allowed for through group activities. The findings have important implications not only for classroom teachers, but also policymakers, school administrators, curriculum specialists and textbook writers.
