Summary: | Magnetic digital microfluidics employs magnetic force to actuate droplets as opposed to digital microfluidics, which manipulates droplets using an array of electrodes. In this academic study, magnetic digital microfluidics is examined along with the concept of developing micro magnetic tools for droplet manipulation. Magnetic digital microfluidics has vast potential which can offer numerous benefits such as accommodating laboratory processes on a chip among its other possible applications. This project’s objectives are to develop micro magnetic tools by incorporating an innovative technique of magnetic particles in additive manufacturing. The project is defined into three key areas; ratio testing of polymer and magnetic particles, design of magnetic tools and functional testing of magnetic tools. Ratio tests are carried out to identify optimal loading conditions of magnetic particles as well as establishing a relation of using different sized magnetic powders. Designs of components are attained using SolidWorks 2019 software, which are 3D-printed using Stereolithography (SLA) and Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) depending on the purpose of individual components. The printed components are than set-up and subjected to functional testing to access its efficiency and capability in performing its intended function. Lastly, this report will present its findings, results and discussion relating to the project and results achieved. To conclude the report, proposed future work, improvements and recommendations are specified. |
