Summary:In this report, the main objective was to understand the Top of Descent (TOD) profiles airlines conduct on the approach to Singapore Changi International Airport (ICAO: WSSS). Specifically, development of models for TOD identification, characterisation and prediction. An understanding of when aircraft commence their descent and what factors affect this crucial point in flight facilitates the growth of air traffic management towards a tailored approach, increasing capacity of airports. 3 months of ADS-B within Singapore Flight Information Region (FIR) was provided via NTU Air Traffic Management Research Institute (ATMRI). TOD identification and prediction was put through a decision tree model and, the results of these predictions were also analysed. This report seeks to provide a starting point towards an Automatic TOD Prediction system for use by air traffic controllers, extending spatial awareness and facilitating progress in tailored approach for Singapore FIR.
