Summary: | This project studies the causes of electromagnetic interference (EMI) due to field-to cable coupling in the case of a switchgear control cable. A pair of Raspberry Pis are programmed to emulate the communication of the signal for controlling the switchgear in a substation. The termination impedances at both ends of the cable are extracted so that they can be imported to an electromagnetic (EM) simulator for modelling and simulation of a switchgear with the control cable in the substation. Comprehensive EM simulations are carried out to evaluate the various factors that can minimize EMI due to field-to-cable coupling mechanism.
In the first part of this report, the background information, literature review on switchgears, field-to-cable coupling and the method to extract termination impedance are described.
After which, the hardware and software used in the project are introduced and implemented with the associated accessories.
Finally, the setup of the experiments, connection of the equipment and all the settings used in the experiments are explained with the results presented. |
