Another issue is the electromagnetic interference (EMI) to the electronics of a mission-critical building, like electrical substations, water treatment plants and data centres. Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is described as electrical circuits that do not generate unwanted EMI and yet are immune to external electromagnetic pollution. This feasible approach is to protect electronic components and systems from external EMI through electromagnetic (EM) shielding. This final year project studies the effects of EMI from the outside of a building, which can affect an electrical circuit inside it. This report focuses on simulations of the EM shielding of a substation building with the intention to evaluate the shielding effectiveness of the building and its adequacy to protect the electronics within the building.
