Summary: | Throughout history, the concept of mega vessels has always been the topic of relevance and
the main reason for this is the constant need to lower cost in order to remain competitive
within the market. This trend of constant interest for bigger and bigger vessels can be
observed within all the major maritime sectors: bulk, tankers and containers. In this report,
the focus will be on container vessels. In order to avoid becoming obsolete due to the incapability of handling these larger vessels, ports, especially those that are involved in the top few trade routes with mega vessels sailing,
will have to constantly upgrade themselves to keep up with the vessels’ specifications. This
report aims to analyse the possible changes that a port will have to undertake in the
circumstances of a 30,000 TEU vessel and evaluate the impacts that these changes will bring
along. In this report, we will be making use of both primary and secondary data to substantiate our
findings. Due to the lack of qualitative data results, a primarily qualitative perspective such as the
PESTLE analysis was used to evaluate the findings. The consolidated evaluation of opinions
from multiple sources on the topic will be helpful for future references. |
