Globalisation and its response : a comparative study of Singapore and Malaysia

This paper is a comparative study of the responses to globalisation by Singapore and Malaysia. This study highlights the different approach to globalisation by Singapore and Malaysia, and explains the salience of the domestic factor as an important variable. Despite the differing approach to their economic management of the their respective economies since the financial crisis in 1997, both countries have done well compared to its other Asian neighbours. This highlights the fact that countries do have a choice - they can still control the pace and direction of globalisation. It also demonstrates the continued relevance of the state as a significant arbiter of globalisation.
