Summary: | This study asserts that harsh authoritarian actions, depressing socio-economic conditions, and the presence of jihadi-extremist rebels, are conditions that will cause the conflict in Chechnya to ignite a Caucasus-wide conflict. Based on those incipient conditions, masses will be mobilised using one, or a combination of mobilisation factors - nationalistic, ethnic or religious - to drive conflict. However, the drivers of conflict in the individual republics vary. As such, there is not "one size fits all" approach for conflict resolution/containment to be effective in a Caucasus-wide conflict. |
