Summary: | The Malay political separatism is not a new phenomenon in Thai politics. It has a long antecedent of struggle against Thai domination and subjugation traced to 1902 at the time when Siam forcibly annexed Patani and the other six Malay provinces in the south. Present secession movements have its modern-day roots in the 1940s political movement of Haji Sulong Bin Abdul Kadir. Hj Sulong personified the struggle of the Malays against the racist assimilation policies of the state which they deemed as threatening the very core of their belief, culture and heritage. |
