“孤独”是人类不可避免的情感或心理状态，在人生的某一个阶段一定会与它相伴。可是大部分的人都畏惧它，因为它会带来空虚与无助感。虽然孤独伴随着人类数千年，但是直到近100多年前，因心理学与精神分析学的兴起，人类才对它有相当的理解与分析。随着时间的推进，孤独已成了现代文学题材的主流之一, 而新加坡文学也不例外，深受着其趋势的影响。英培安身为新加坡文学泰斗、现代派作家，孤独可以说是贯穿了他大部分作品的主题。至此，本文将以英培安在2011年出版的《画室》为研究对象，结合心理学、精神分析学以及社会学来分析其孤独感的表现，最后，本文也将借助历史化与文本细读来解释其孤独感之来源。Loneliness, or otherwise, solitude is a type of emotion or mental condition that is inevitable in human nature as we will encounter it at least once in our lifetime. However, most human beings are afraid of being alone as it comes with a sense of emptiness and helplessness. Although loneliness had been around since the start of human civilization, but academic research only started in recent century with the rise of psychology and psychoanalysis. Over the years, loneliness has become a trending theme in modern literature, which has unavoidably significantly influenced the field of Singapore Chinese literature. Yeng Pway Ngon, who is a famous modernist Chinese author in Singapore, has “loneliness” as a common genre across his literature work. Therefore, this essay will be using Art Studio published in 2011 by Yeng Pway Ngon as a research subject, together with the study of psychology, psychoanalysis, and sociology to analyse the narration of loneliness in this novel. Lastly, the understanding of the root causes of loneliness will be achieved through in-depth research on historical background in conjunction with cross-referencing of other literature works.
