Description
Edward Yang (1947-2007) was one of the leading filmmakers in the 80’s to 90’s film movement known as the Taiwanese New Wave. His films have deeply revealed multiple underlying issues in the current urban society of Taiwan, including the issue on love and marriage. The motivation behind the focus on the concept of love and marriage in this essay is because the significance of love and marriage are often neglected by the public as it customarily appears in every movie plot. This led to the public being accustomed to the love and marriage scenes in most films and hence little thoughts are given to it. Additionally, very little research papers could be found on the topic of love and marriage. Therefore, it sparks an interest within me to analyse the phenomenon of love and marriage, and how some fear love and marriage which results in affected relationships between couples. The analysis of contemporary “terrible” encounter in love and marriage will be based on real-life examples as well as an in-depth study of the 5 movie plots directed by Edward Yang, namely - “ That Day on the Beach”, “Taipei Story”, “Terrorizers”, “A Brighter Summer Day”, and “Mahjong”. In the thesis, these five movie plots will be cross-referenced to bring out similar points of view regarding the concept of “terrible” encounter behind love and marriage. Besides the 5 movie plots, this thesis also includes the use of academic papers, literature books and online articles to further explore and substantiate the relationship between the love in films as oppose to the love in reality. Through the in-depth research, I have discovered that the contemporary view of love and marriage faces the influence of economic and ideological changes. The thesis also further brings out the point that men and women both have similar perspectives towards love and marriage, and these perspectives mainly consist of fear. At the same time, the "platonic" concept of love originally advocated by Director Edward Yang is also difficult to realize in both movies and reality. In this way, we understand that the "impurities" of love such as sexual elements also have its own effects in the development of a relationship. Therefore, through Edward Yang's films, we understand that in reality public perceptions of platonic relationship are usually unhealthy in a relationship. Such perceptions have led to many social issues in love and marriage which may also contribute to the broken marriages we observe in reality.
