美国亚洲基金会对自由世界的文化宣传 ： 以马来亚文化事业有限公司出版的新马华文教科书为例 (1959-1965) = The Asia Foundation’s cultural propaganda on free world : a case study of the Chinese textbook published by Malaya Press in Singapore and Malaya (1959-1965)

本文以马来亚文化事业有限公司为个案分析美国非政府组织亚洲基金会在冷战时期对自由世界的文化宣传，通过该公司为新加坡华文中学于1959年至1965年出版的《华文》和《公民》教科书探讨其对自由世界的传播，了解亚洲基金会如何通过教育达到其反共目的，并推广自由世界的理念。马来亚文化事业有限公司是由接受亚洲基金会资助的香港“第三势力”友联文化机构成立，为马来亚和新加坡编辑和出版华文教科书与左翼出版社对抗和消除其在教科书市场垄断的局势，通过教育消除中国左翼对新马华人的渗透并传播自由世界，提倡资本主义的现代化意识形态，促使新马走向社会转型，成为现代化国家。本文会先探讨亚洲基金会与友联文化机构的关系和运作，了解马来亚文化事业有限公司的成立目的及其在1959年至1965年间的发展，最后，通过比较研究和内容与结构分析了解《华文》和《公民》如何传播自由世界的民主理念并灌输反共意识。而亚洲基金会与友联文化机构和马来亚文化事业有限公司之间的互动和相关信息将以史丹福大学胡佛研究所图书档案馆收藏的亚洲基金会在马来亚和新加坡的档案为参考，结合教科书内容探讨亚洲基金会在马来亚施行的文化宣传策略。This paper explores on the propagation of Free World in Singapore and Malaya Chinese textbook published by Malaya Press in 1959-1965. The Malaya Press was under the Union Cultural Organization Ltd (UCO) from Hong Kong, which served as the Third Party in the political system and received funding from US private non-profit organization, The Asia Foundation (TAF), to establish its cultural propaganda in Hong Kong and Malaya. Malaya Press was established to publish Chinese textbooks in Singapore and Malaya to quash the monopoly situation of leftist publishers had in the textbooks market and promote an ideology advocating modernization through capitalism. This led Singapore and Malaya to undergo social transformation to become a modern country. This paper will analyze the working relationship between TAF and UCO as well as explore on the development of Malaya Press from 1959 to 1965. It will analyze the propagation and contents of Free World to investigate how the textbook indoctrinated in the Chinese an anti-communist ideology by studying on its Chinese language and Civics textbook. This study will extract information from the TAF’s archival material on Malaya and Singapore collected from Hoover Institution Library and Archives, Stanford University to help us understand the operations of TAF, UCO and Malaya Press. In addition to that, the analyzed of Malaya Press’s textbooks also aid in assembling more information on TAF and its cultural propaganda measures to serve its anti-communist purpose.
