| Summary: | The central thesis of this paper is that the conception of Singapore's security is closely intertwined with that of the nation's quest for national identity and while tremendous amount of effort and resources have been invested in imagining and domesticating a national identity, Singapore's past imagining may face ontological instability as new challenges such as transnational threats and globalisation are emerging to dilute previous efforts. The paper will analyse and conceptualise the phases of Singapore's nationalistic movements and will conclude with a proposed framework to solidify the notion of national identity. |
