Summary: | This project is an exploratory study on a few emerging issues related to Enterprise Information Collaboration. A trend towards integrating blogs and wikis as part of the Enterprise gradually shapes the development of commercial Content Management Systems. In established companies and organizations, via easy-to-use Enterprise Content Management Systems, blogs and wikis are seen as flexible solutions for fostering practices of Information Collaboration, as well as establishing a self-learning community and making communication easier among customers, partners and the public.
This study observes that the community formation process inside organizations can be driven and promoted by Web 2.0 systems, and shows that how an enterprise can take advantage of community among its staffs and customers. As such, identification of community through its formation process is critical for an enterprise who wants to utilize Web 2.0 technologies. By reviewing a few recent research projects, it is found that identification of communities among blogs is possible, however not effective and imprecise. This research then proposes a new method, Wiki and Blog Synchronization (WBS), which, we argue, has a better mechanism for identifying communities.
There are two main objectives of this research. First, it is to illustrate the ease of integrating Web 2.0 into enterprise environment, by devising the WBS approach to refine and enhance Web 2.0 systems in alignment with other legacy systems in Enterprise. This Wiki Blog Synchronization approach is also developed to alleviate the fear that traditional Content Management Systems, unlike those Web 2.0 systems, is rarely designed with "user participation" in mind and this is also the main reason Web 2.0 should be introduced into Enterprise. In this study, the WBS approach is designed and properly developed to overcome the problems in embedding Web2.0 systems into Enterprise applications, enhancing existing solutions, and facilitating the communication process among community members. Second, this implementation of WBS also allows system administrator to monitor interrelations among users, therefore it should encourage system administrator to do further investigation based on the data by introducing newly developed / customized software applications based on this method. Consequently, we observes that it is allowed to facilitate the creation process of communities, launch self-learning mechanism in the community, and make the authoring process much easier and effective.
In summary, the study conducted and the software modules developed are innovative; nonetheless, it is just a start. There are still many issues to be considered and improvements that to be made accordingly. Therefore, the developed Wiki Blog Synchronization approach must be updated to cope with continuously evolving Web 2.0 concepts and features. |
