Description
Since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, the Taiwan Issue remains unresolved. Tensions in the Cross-straits relations have intensified since the Democratic Progressive Party led by Tsai Ing-wen became Taiwan’s ruling party as well as the heightened cooperation between Taiwan and the United States. As the world enters an era of economic globalization, a militant approach is no longer seen as the most viable conflict resolution strategy. Consequently, more countries have instead shifted their focus towards reinforcing soft power. In 2007, Hu Jintao championed for the elevation of “Soft Power” of Chinese culture when he spoke during the 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. Since then, Mainland China pivoted towards soft power which could explain why Mainland China’s idol survival variety programmes have seen massive success in recent years, with 2018 labelled as the first year of the “idol wave” locally. As a platform that creates influential idols and idol groups that in turn wield soft power, the socio-political impact of these variety programmes should not be underestimated. As such, this paper aims to analyse the impact of Mainland China’s cultural soft power on Taiwan’s political security through a critical study of idol survival variety programmes. By analysing and examining the development of idol survival variety programmes in Mainland China and Taiwan, specifically “Youth With You (season 2)” and “Dancing Diamond 52” from Mainland China and Taiwan respectively, the paper posits that through the broadcasting of idol survival variety programmes, Mainland China has enhanced her national image and gained greater cultural impact alongside international influences. To a significant extent, this interferes with the political ideologies and patriotism of the Taiwanese people and poses threats to Taiwan’s sovereignty.
