Description
In 2019, a large-scale democratic demonstration took place in Hong Kong against the Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill. Besides attracting international attention, the demonstration also garnered tremendous reaction from Hong Kong's literary scene. This is exemplified by Hon Lai Chu’s novel “Darkness under the Sun”, published in 2020. Hon is often recognised for her unique writing style that uses fiction to reflect the reality of Hong Kong society by focusing on the lives of the locals. This is the first time that she has made use of a diary format in Epistolary writing which was adopted from a witness’s perception of the 2019 Hong Kong Anti- Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement. This combination between the examination of the initial societal situation and division, results in a comprehensive public yet personal memoir. This thesis aims to analyse “Darkness Under the Sun” using two types of writing frameworks; ‘Atrocity Literature’ and ‘Epistolary Novel’. The theme of the novel would be discussed in two parts within this thesis: The first analyses Hon Lai Chu’s attitudes towards ‘revenge’ through a philosophical perspective. For Hon, revenge is not about counterviolence, but using Greek mythology, religious examples, and literary allusions to expose crimes, preserve memories and accumulate power . The second analyses Hon’s comprehension of ‘redemption’ from a religious standpoint. “Redemption” here refers to atonement, repentance and acceptance. Hon's target audience is readers who are concerned about the 2019 Hong Kong Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement. This would be followed by uncovering how the author uses the power of Literature and Media to criticise the socio-political system of Hong Kong.
