These studies were mainly focusing on the political landscape in Malaysia, namely how the political oppression exerted on Malaysian Chinese would affect their local identity. However, after the Hong Kong Protest 2019, the identity turn had been found among Malaysian Chinese, followed by the phenomenon of “Chinese Gum” and “Western Puppies”, which showed that they are confused about their identity of being Malaysian and Chinese, and few studies were conducted to explore this identity turn. In order to expand the research layout of identity studies on Malaysian Chinese, this paper will aim to answer how this identity turn is formed. Also, this paper will discuss the identity trends of Malaysian Chinese, and the reason that the trend is formed, by analysing the comments they left under the comment sections of media pages, and applying the historical context as the background of the discussion.
