Description
Summary:In the current day, flat panel displays such as the LCD television and the plasma offeres very high picture resolution. These high picture resolutions may range up to multi-million pixels with very good and defined details. However due to video compressions, the quality of the video images suffer. Artifacts which are also known as blockiness appear in the videos as a result of the lossy video compression that is done on the videos. Video compressions are generally based on the Block Discrete Cosine Transform (BDCT). The MPEG is an example of a video format that makes use of this kind of video compression in their videos. The artifacts or blockiness that are introduced in the pictures are casued by brightness discontinuities along the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) block boundary. This is a result of high compression ratio. Hence blockiness leads to poor picture quality in areas with fine details.
