Summary:This paper studies the background literature with regards to the horror genre and discusses the effects which society have on innovations in the horror genre. The dynamics of this relationship, with emphasis on how horror movies are influenced by society and what society perceives are the effects of horror films on viewers, is also studied. The top 100 English movies in Singapore and America are used in this study to analyse the popularity of the horror movie. An inflation-adjusted table listing the domestic performance of the top 100 films in the United States is included to discover the overall popularity of horror movies in the history of motion pictures. The top-grossing 15 horror movies in Singapore over the eight-year period of 1988 to 1996 are also listed.
