Jonathan's status-conscious mother, Anne, however, thinks Maria is too poor to be mixing with Jonathan. Paul, Jonathan's father, however, is ashamed of his own humble beginnings and chooses to ignore Maria and Jonathan's relationship. Anne, refusing to make decisions, forces Paul to "do something" about her son's relationship with the maid. Paul dismisses Maria and offers to pay her way home. Maria rejects Paul's bribe but decides to leave anyhow. Will Jonathan bear to see his one chance of happiness leave, or simply accept his parents' decision?
