Fabrication of transparent bamboo targeting energy-saving smart windows

The energy consumed by the building sector accounts for 40% of the world’s energy consumption. HVAC accounts for the highest amount of energy consumed in the buildings. Windows are considered to be the least energy efficient part. In the past 5 years, several methods were explored to reduce the ener...

HVAC accounts for the highest amount of energy consumed in the buildings. Windows are considered to be the least energy efficient part. In the past 5 years, several methods were explored to reduce the energy consumption in the building. Low-E glass is one of the most commercially available energy saving windows. However, the high amount of energy consumed during its manufacturing requires a greener alternative. Wood-based window has become a research interest due to its abundancy and cheap manufacturing cost. Comparatively, bamboo has higher rate of growth than wood while displaying strong mechanical properties and high impact toughness. Therefore, in this project we aim to fabricate a bamboo derived transparent low emission window. Complete delignification and epoxy-infiltration into the bamboo are done to achieve bamboo derived transparent window. With AgNW spin- coated onto the transparent window, total of 28.1% of energy can be conserved by using AgNW coated bamboo window.
