Summary: | The purpose of this project is to develop and implement a Smart Home System through automating, commanding, and controlling all deployed sensors and actuators remotely via an Android mobile application. This project's target audience revolves around people with disabilities and special needs. This project's deliverables will showcase how such a Smart Home System can be implemented and deployed in a typical flat in Singapore.
The project was divided into four distinct phases; Planning, Researching, Development and Implementation, and Reporting and Presentation.
The research was conducted to understand what Smart Home Systems products are available on the market today. The product's price point, features, limitations, and compatibility are compared to understand what features must be implemented into the project and how to enable ease of deployment of the hardware used in this project into the households of the disabled or people with special needs.
The Smart Home System prototype was developed and implemented using Raspberry Pi (RPi) and NodeMCU ESP8266 Micro-Controllers. Raspberry Pi and NodeMCU modules were used as both of them can be configured to perform similar tasks as off-the-shelf Smart Home System solutions but at a cheaper price point.
Android mobile application was also created to ease users' ability to manage, control, and monitor the Smart Home System remotely. Google Voice Assistance was also integrated into the Smart Home System for voice activation and management of the implemented features.
A mini showroom was created from scratch to house the Smart Home System prototype for showcasing and presenting the various features and, functionality implemented and how the Android mobile application can remotely control these features. |
