The aviation industry has grown exponentially since the start of the 20th century, after the successful invention of the airplane by the Wright brothers in 1903. Traditional cargo movement via sea and land saw a new unprecedented rival that was potentially faster and more efficient. The first air freight
shipment dates back to 1910, where 200 pounds of silk was flown between two cities in Ohio – Dayton and Columbus (Connaught, n.d). The plane was pit against an express train and won the world speed record of 57 minutes.
The boom in the aviation industry has resulted in branching out into 2 main sectors – air cargo and passenger flights. The latter is more in the public eye, enduring more scrutiny as air travel is essential for global movement and trade.
This research focuses on the former, air logistics, particularly in Singapore. Singapore is trade-driven and air logistics brings a lot of potential and challenges to this small island nation. This paper aims to understand the current market trends in the world, and understanding how Singapore air logistic firms can apply these technological market trends into a local context to become a new competitive advantage
against the world. |
