An experimental investigation of shape memory polymer for alcohol activated self-tightening band-aid
Band-aids are most notable for covering wounds and protecting them from bacteria. Its components - the polyurethane film, absorbent pad, and hypoallergenic adhesive - have provided the ideal moist environment for healing wounds. However, the healing process could further improve with a band-aid of s...

Its components - the polyurethane film, absorbent pad, and hypoallergenic adhesive - have provided the ideal moist environment for healing wounds. However, the healing process could further improve with a band-aid of self-closing abilities. This study aims to determine a suitable hypoallergenic adhesive to develop the band-aid with Shape Memory Polymer (SMP) MM5520, capable of closing minor wounds upon alcohol application. The band-aid also needs to be cost-effective.Four prospective adhesives underwent testing to determine if their adhesion hinders SMP MM5520's shape recovery abilities. An additional factor to consider is their suitability for the actual band-aid application. Suitability focuses on the biocompatibility and hypoallergenic of the adhesion. With the use of commercialised adhesives, the band-aid has great potentials to positively impact the medical industry with its cost-effectiveness and capability to improve wound care.
