Summary: | As the elderly population in Singapore has been increasing over the last decade, healthcare for the elderly has made vast improvements. However, accidental falls of elderly can lead to serious injuries and consequences. Therefore, it is important to be able to effective and even pre-emptive detect ion of falls for the sake of both elderly and their caregivers. In my final year project, I will design a Falling Detection System (FDS) for people in nursing homes. This technology will be making use of surveillance cameras in the nursing home and appropriate intelligent processing algorithms. Our algorithm will only focus on situations that the elderly would be sitting down or standing up from a chair, rather than walking forward. Research has shown that sitting or standing from a chair accounts for a higher percentage of falls. By using the posture and identifying people from the video of the surveillance camera, an alarm will be triggered when a fall is detected. To evaluate the effectiveness of the FDS, we will simulate different types of falls and using open-sourced videos on the internet. With the success of the FDS, nursing homes in Singapore can adopt such approaches to be able to care for the elderly immediately. |
