从《蒙马特遗书》中的书信/日记体叙述策略探讨台湾女同性恋族群主体之确立 = A study of the narrative strategies of epistolary and diary writing in Le Testament de Montmartre and its impact on the identity formation of Taiwan’s lesbian community

Chiu Miao-chin’s novel, Le Testament de Montmartre (Mengmate Yishu), raised much awareness among Taiwan’s lesbian community since it was first published in 1996. Unlike previous Taiwan lesbian-themed novels which were more reserved when broaching the topic of sexuality, Le Testament de Montmartre takes a far more explicit approach. Chiu’s use of narratives and writing forms in Le Testament de Montmartre has managed to break through the past obstacles which Taiwan lesbian-themed novels faced – that is to write the story under the influence of the patriarchal society and taking on a heterosexual point of view. Thus, it can be said that Le Testament de Montmartre has a far reaching impact on Taiwan’s lesbian community as it provided a voice for the lesbian community and helped shape the community’s identity. Previous studies done on Le Testament de Montmartre focused on “Compulsory Heterosexuality” and its restraining effects on the character’s lesbian identity, and Chiu’s death narratives. However, few studies have been done on the analysis of its literary form, which is a combination of letters and diary entries, used in the novel. Thus, this paper seeks to examine how the combination of letters and diary entries used by Chiu in the novel exemplifies Hélène Cixous’s theory of Écriture Féminine, and its impact on the identity formation of Taiwan’s lesbian community. Firstly, this paper will analyze the relationship between the wave of Taiwanese lesbian-themed novels during the mid 1990s and the increasing visibility and voice of the Taiwanese lesbian community. More specifically, it seeks to discuss how Chiu has helped the Taiwanese lesbian community to find their voice through her lesbian-themed novels. Next, the paper will introduce the structure of the novel and describe the characteristics of epistolary and diary writing. In addition, the essay seeks to explain why it is difficult to classify Le Testament de Montmartre into any particular genre. The main discussion of the paper will focus on how the narrative language and characteristics of epistolary and diary writing in Le Testament de Montmartre embody Écriture Féminine, thus challenging the use of patriarchal language and calling upon the Taiwanese lesbian community to form their self identity. Lastly, through the discussion of how Luo Yijun’s And Now She Remains in You (Qian Bei Huai) evoked the “Chiu Miao-chin phenomenon”, this paper hopes to assess the impact of Chiu and Le Testament de Montmartre on Taiwan. |
