A crucial network and enabler of globalization, the maritime industry is faced with demanding challenges in the wake of COVID-19. The persistent effects are severe, with approximately 90% of world trade dependent on ships for transportation; as they are the most cost-effective mode of transporting raw materials and goods around the world. The pandemic has forced port and terminals as the gateway into countries to react and tested its adaptability. Maritime services face the test of operational failures where more is required to strengthen the resilience of its operations. As varied degrees of response continue developing internationally, the shipping industry is operating in uncharted waters. Integral knowledge on the nature of this virus and its impacts on the economic activity are difficult to assess and quick to evolve overnight. In these unprecedented times, the reliability of maritime services to continue undisrupted shipment of necessities around the world will play a vital role in overcoming the crisis. Players of the industry will need to maintain their adaptability and agility to this uncertainty, and prioritising the constructing of effective response plans and strategies.
