Summary: | While studies have established that countries which impose more restrictions on religion tend to experience higher levels of religious violence, the effects of country wealth on religious violence are less perspicuous. Utilising cross-national time-series analysis of data from 175 countries spanning 1991 – 2018, this study finds that countries which spend a larger share of their wealth to impose restrictions on minority, majority, or all religions are more likely to experience higher levels of religious hostilities and violence. The study concludes with implications for research and policy. |
