Understanding youth belonging in Singapore

With an increasing number of migrants stemming from global flows, Singaporean youths must tussle for jobs in a competitive landscape. This is coupled with a rising cost of living of being in Singapore. Being part of the next generation to live in Singapore, youths are undeniably anxious. Through an empirical study of Singapore, I offer analysis to how youths conceptualise belonging, and how economic well being plays a part in affecting these feelings of rootedness in our neoliberal city-state. I present evidence that belonging is navigated differently across ethnic lines, and that being employed influences the way that youths perceive material wellbeing. This study helps us understand the needs and aspirations for youths in hopes for building a better home to belong in.
