However, little has been done to examine youth gambling. It is noted that gambling among college students has been on the rise. Some researchers highlighted that gamblers who started gambling in their adolescence have a higher tendency of developing into problem gamblers. Given college students are at a transitional phase where they are vulnerable to be influenced, it is important for us to understand the factors influencing college students’ motivation to gamble and continue gambling. In this report, we will be looking to understand college students’ motivation to gamble and to continue gambling. Researchers pointed out that gambling behavior could be influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Extrinsically, social influence such as family and friends are believed to shape gambling behavior. Intrinsically, cognition, affect and self-esteem are also widely studied. An examination into the motivations of gambling behavior in college students of ages 16-21 will thus aid to facilitate the understanding their gambling behavior.
